| Early Showa HINA DOLL Court Musician |

This lively Hina doll is a court musician represented by his youthful appearance and vividly colored robes. It is likely that his shaped hands once held drum sticks for playing the drum.
Hina are small dolls for girls and have existed since the Heian Period (794-1185). It is customary to display these dolls on the Girl's Day, March 3rd to celebrate the growth and happiness of a young girl in the family.
The Hina dolls are usually placed on a five or seven-tiered stand covered with a red carpet. The emperor and empress sit on the top, and under them come three court ladies, followed by five court musicians, two ministers and three attendants in the bottom row.
This Hina doll has a beautiful milky white Gofun (powdered shell) face with stunning life-like details carefully filled in by the hand of a skilled artist. It is unmistakably a work of art that speaks to us all.
