| KAWARA Roof Tile Ornament of Mystical Cat |

In early times, it was only the rich who could afford to have Kawara or ceramic roofing tiles on their houses, where you would also find an ornamental tile such as this one, perched on top of the gable.
Made of a fine clay that was fired at a very high temperature, creating a stone-like material that is both dense and heavy, it takes on a slate gray color that would have matched the roofing tiles of the old Japanese homes or temple buildings.
This handsome creature could be a cat or a tiger or a combination of the two. It has sharp fangs, a large mouth and a cute pug nose that is slightly twisted to the left. His tail is curled all the way up to his face as he prowls through the bamboo forest.
With its convenient free-standing structure, this Kawara will make an instant display on the shelf, desk or anywhere prominent in your house. There is a built in hole on the back of the Kawara where you can also insert a string to hang this piece on the wall. |
