| Indigo KASURI Cotton Cloth, Samurai's Castle (A) |

This attractive indigo ikat cotton cloth was made in the late Meiji period. Prior to the Meiji era, such indigo ikat cotton fabrics were used to make everyday clothes for Japanese farmers, but as their popularity spread across the country, they were utilized into other products, and came to be an important source of income for the rural farmhouses.
Made originally as part of a Futon cover, this cotton fabric uses the traditional ikat weave technique (Kasuri) on both the warp and the weft, and has a wonderful homemade feel.
The alternating design of Samurai's castle and combined geometric shapes make a bold statement against the deep indigo background. The center of the geometric design is a sickle, which seems to speak of people's wish for good harvest.
To achieve the beautiful deep indigo dye color, the cotton yarn is dipped in the extract of the indigo plant over and over again. Due to the laborious manufacturing process, the production of genuine indigo cotton is now limited to only a few small local areas in Japan.
Loved by textile artists and collectors throughout the world, Kasuri indigo cotton is a highly collectible item. Hang on the wall, laid on the table or draped over furniture, it would add a warm appeal to any home or office interior. |
