Shunga Woodblock Print, Edo Period Lovers No. 21

This beautiful and original work of art is attributed to Kunisada (1786 - 1864) by its application of radiant colors and intense detail.

Here, with this intimately small print called Makura-e (literally, Pillow Painting), we are permitted to view a private encounter of two young lovers.

Shunga, as these prints are known, translates to "Spring Painting" and, in the literal sense, is depicted here in this fresh mood, with the details of the surroundings richening the story behind.

These prints, once so available to the public as an aspect of everyday culture, they are now highly collectible as pieces of art.
