| Archival Framed Antique Obi Fabric, Pair of Cranes (D) |
In the Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho (1912-1926) periods, the Maru obi, a fragment of which we here see framed, was an opulent and luxurious accessory.
Now preserved for future generations to enjoy, it is carefully preserved in acid-free archival matting and tastefully encased with a dark brown, mock-bamboo frame.
The repeat theme of paired flying cranes, mating for their long life and bringing the wearer that same omen, are seen among billowy burgundy and silver leaved chrysanthemum and forest green pine boughs.
Smaller baby blue and dusky pink and white button chrysanthemum, with white edged green leaves fill the delicate, light olive background.
