Men's Black HAORI Shrine & Romantic Poem

The grand entrance scene on the rich golden-brown satin lining belongs to Oharano shrine, a historic shrine located in the south-west of Kyoto and on the slopes of Mount Oshio.

When the Japanese capital was moved from the ancient city of Nara to Kyoto in the 8th century, the then influential Fujiwara family invited their tutelary god to move to a new shrine in Oharano.

This was accepted and it is said that the god rode on the back of a deer to enter the new capital. Deer is a messenger of the god and guards the entrance of the Oharano Shrine even today as shown on ths haori's lining.

The artistically woven poem on the upper right was produced by Ariwarano Narihira (825-880), a poet-aristocrat, better known as a handsome playboy in the Heian period.

The poem was presented to his ex-lover and emperor's wife, Takaiko or Empress Nijo (843-910) upon her visit to Oharano shrine when he accompanied her as one of the attendants. The poem reads "Today, even the mountains of Oshio shall remember the glorious times of the ancient gods" -- perhaps in his deep heart, the poet wanted to remind the empress of the romance that they once had.

The love story of Narihira and Takaiko has been the inspiration of Noh story "Oshio" which is the title of the note book that we see on the lower left with a woven design of an aristocrat's headgear below it.

The smooth black exterior is decorated with five hawk feather design family crest at the shoulder line.
