Vintage Book: The Way of Ume, First Edition

The Way of Ume by Edith A. Sawyer was published in New York by William Edwin Rudge, in 1928. This is a first edition, with a handwritten dedication in ink by the author to the Japanese Christian Institute Library.

The introduction was written by William Elliot Griffis (1843-1928), a few weeks before his death. Griffis went to live in Japan in 1871 and became the supervisor of education in the region of Echizen, moving on to become the chair of physics in 1872-4 at the Imperial University of Tokyo. Dr. Griffis published many books on Japan, having lived there during feudal times and was a respected authority in his day.

There is a b/w plate opposite the title page of Ume, showing the lady focused in the story within. This story portrays a man and woman as they lived through the changing times of Japan as it moved into the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), leaving its feudal times in the past.

Portions of the folk-story Tsubo Saka have been adapted in the latter pages of the book, to color the story and other folk tales have been reflected elsewhere.

There is an introduction and preface, with a total of 145 pages, with a b/w plate of Mt. Fuji on the last page.
