Vintage Book: Things Japanese



Things Japanese, being Notes on Various Subjects Connected with Japan, by Basil Hall Chamberlain. This is the fifth edition revised and printed in 1905 by John Murray, London.

This is a hard indigo blue cloth cover edition with gold lettering. There is a preface followed by a note on the pronunciation of Japanese words and then an introduction. There is a detailed index and a fold-out colored map of Japan in Provinces.

The book speaks of capital cities, climate, the people, its history and mythology, tea, society, silk and the status of woman. There are 552 pages.

Basil Hall Chamberlain was Emeritus Professor of Japanese and Philology in the Imperial University of Tokyo. There is a personal book plate on the inside cover from a former owner.

Condition The inside cover pages are yellowed with age and tearing away from the binding in places. The indigo blue cloth bound hard cover has worn corners and fading in the color. The spine is worn at the top and bottom.
