Antique BRONZE MIRROR Flowers & Hana Character

Flowers are in full bloom on this elegant pale copper tone handled mirror (E-kagami).

Surrounding a bold and shiny Kanji script "Hana" (flower) in the center are crisp relief patterns of Japan's favourite flowers: chrysanthemums, peonies and cherry flowers.

It is not hard to imagine that such a feminine design was made to be given to a young girl for her wedding or commissioned by a woman of high stature. Any woman would have owned it with pride!

At the center bottom, is a mark proving the quality of the mirror (Tenkaichi), followed by a surname, Tsuda that may have belonged to the commissioner or the province officer who approved the making of the mirror, the province name Izumi (now Osaka area) and the signature of the mirror maker, Yoshitsugu.

You may wish to remove the aged patina of the metal to enhance the detailed relief design. This could lower the value of the piece, but is a personal choice should you be the proud owner of this historical artifact.
