Japan is known for the beauty of its variety of flowers and their viewing is an integral part of the Japanese appreciation of beauty in nature.
These prints originate from a book published in the 1950s that teaches us the art of Japanese flower arrangement and the intriguing symbolism in the Japanese culture behind each flower.
The prints are as fresh as if made today and the sheer attention to detail is just stunning. We presented them in a light moss green matt to bring out the colours of nature most beautifully.
The artfully trimmed double windows show an artistic floral display on one side and the symbolism of the flower on the other (see below for full text), with a delightful little poem on the upper right, just as portrayed in the original book.

The chrysanthemum is called the flower of Autumn and each year during the season when the blooms are at their height a garden reception is given by the Japanese government so that a favoured few may gather to admire some outstanding examples of this regal flower.
Here as well as all over the country the potted plants are arranged in long open sheds and many varieties bear names as poetical as the verses composed in their honour.
The Chrysanthemum is symbolic of longevity because it blooms longer than most flowers; and it is used at gatherings celebrating a man's retirement from public office since it suggests a future of well-deserved ease. |
