Japan is known for the beauty of its variety of flowers and their viewing is an integral part of the Japanese appreciation of beauty in nature.
These prints originate from a book published in the 1950s that teaches us the art of Japanese flower arrangement and the intriguing symbolism in the Japanese culture behind each flower.
The prints are as fresh as if made today and the sheer attention to detail is just stunning. We presented them in a light moss green matt to bring out the colours of nature most beautifully.
The artfully trimmed double windows show an artistic floral display on one side and the symbolism of the flower on the other (see below for full text), with a delightful little poem on the upper right, just as portrayed in the original book.

Hear the Pine: May your prosperity be as constant as the greenness of my mantle, and may your friends stand as I do, steadfast against the adverse winds of the world.
Hear the Bamboo: May your life-time be as long as mine and may you know the joy of living abundantly.
Hear the Plum: May your hopes rise fresh and strong like the young shoots that spring from my rugged trunk, and may your life flower with loveliness.
And so the three companions, Sho-chiku-bai, in strength, abundance, and beauty, herald a new-born year. |
