Hand tinted photographs became popular just after the turn of the 19th century in Japan, in the late Meiji period. It was the only way to bring natural colour to the photograph and was considered an art form, not necessarily affordable to all.

One wears a trusty Hachimaki (headband) while another wears a straw sun hat. The event of admiring the cherry blossom is a tradition in Japan, here so beautifully captured by vintage photography. |
