This photo is a reproduction of an excellent quality hand tinted photograph from the Meiji period.
Hand tinted photographs became popular just after the turn of the 19th century in Japan, in the late Meiji period. It was the only way to bring natural colour to the photograph and was considered an art form, not necessarily affordable to all.
Now it is made available to you, with the same handmade texture and quality preserved, and artfully presented with black matt and frame with glass cover.

This beautiful young Japanese woman, posed for her portrait holding the Imperial emblem of the chrysanthemum.
Her obi is quite ornate, complimenting the simplicity of the kimono. Perhaps the artist who artfully hand-tinted the photograph, knew it was a lavender silk fabric or that the Obi-age (soft sash) tucked into her obi, was red and her handkerchief white.
His interpretation is quite perfect, down to her soft, blushing cheeks and blood red lips. |
