This photo is a reproduction of an excellent quality hand tinted photograph from the Meiji period.
Hand tinted photographs became popular just after the turn of the 19th century in Japan, in the late Meiji period. It was the only way to bring natural colour to the photograph and was considered an art form, not necessarily affordable to all.

It is a rare experience for the Westerner to be able to closely observe the secretive world of the Japanese geisha.
Here we see the geisha playing the Shamisen, seated on a Zabuton (floor cushion) on Tatami matting. Elaborate folding screens with plum blossoms form a backdrop for this entrancing performance.
In the foreground we see a tray set for tea and another for tobacco, to be enjoyed following the private concert.
The artist has hand-tinted the photograph, focusing the blushed cheeks, red lips, pale blue kimono, with pink collar and lining. The Zabuton has been given some green shading and the teapot a gold hue. Even the plum blossom is pale pink behind. |
