| Shunga Woodblock Print, Two Lovers No. 9 |

This tasteful work of art attributed to Kunisada (1786 - 1864), has crisp, bright colours that appear as clean and fresh as when first printed. If this was made in the first printing it would be acredited to circa 1840s.
Later printings might reflect the use of fewer and cheaper pigments, with the result of subdued colours, using the original woodblocks. The date of this printing would not extend beyond the Meiji period.
Japanese woodblock prints with erotic images are called Shunga (literally, Spring Paintings) and are also known as Makura-e when their sizes are particularly small as these adorable 5 x 3.7 inch prints. Makura-e means Pillow Paintings as it would be an adult's secret bedtime entertainment.
The room setting is translated in great and exacting detail, although the artist enables the focus to remain on the two lovers. The woman lies still with her eyes closed with her head gently resting on her hand, as her partner embraces her with his own passion.
An open book lies next to her that she was perhaps reading before she became distracted by his love.
The detail of the hair lines, fingers and toes is exceptional. The artist conveys the intimacy of their mood as the man's face is hidden by his raised shoulder and her red lips are partially obscured by her silk kimono. |
