| Shunga Woodblock Print, Two Lovers No. 1 |

This tasteful work of art attributed to Kunisada (1786 - 1864), has crisp, bright colors that appear as clean and fresh as when first printed. If this was made in the first printing it would be acredited to circa 1840s.
Later printings might reflect the use of fewer and cheaper pigments, with the result of subdued colors. The date of this printing would not extend beyond the Meiji period.
Japanese woodblock prints with erotic images are called Shunga (literally, Spring Paintings) and are also known as Makura-e when their sizes are particularly small as these 5 x 3.7 inch prints. Makura-e means Pillow Paintings as it would be an adult's secret bedtime entertainment.
The haunting sound of the Shamisen (plucked zither) perhaps stirred the emotions of these impassioned lovers. The deep, rich colors used by the artist are almost touchable in this print. The glancing look in their eyes shows fervent desire as the woman is delicately touched by her lover. |
