This is an extraordinarily sumptuous furisode. Let me say first that the colours are much more vivid and attractive on the actual piece than the photos may show (especially yellow).
The patterns are all tie-dyed with a wonderful juxtaposition of pine trees in red, blue, yellow and green primitive colours with plum flowers outlined in violet on the background. The centers of the plum flowers are highlighted with red embroideries. Rich gold couching and gold leafing add the final touch.
Note also the lower lining is quite a splendor (see photo R12). Although made of the same fabric, it is divided into tie-dyed areas and areas without the tie-dye which shows the beautiful deep violet colour and the intricate floral fret damask patterns.
The inside of the sleeves below the armhole and tips of sleeves are lined with another layer of fabric in red.
Top to bottom of the flowing sleeve measures 41 1/2 inches. |
