| Meiji, Dye & Design Sample No.35 |

There are many processes in the making of beautiful Japanese kimonos and this is one of the first steps of the decorative aspects of it.
These beautiful dye and design samples, currently thirty-two sheets in our possession and of which four are listed today, were made by an individual artist or a group of talented painters around the Meiji period to present to kimono boutiques or the intermediating wholesalers.
The base and the frames of the sheets are made of layers of Japanese washi papers with carefully crafted fine silk placed in the middle. Each of the silk are made of different techniques and are all intricately hand-painted with the most innovative designs and delicate colours.
The marks on the bottom corners or the backside of the sheets represent the name of the artist or the leader of craftsmen who produced the works. It reads Kojima Shigetaro from Echigo region, now Niigata prefecture.
These beautiful items are just in the right shape to be framed for a tasteful display at home or office, and are rare and highly recommended collectible for kimono and textile collectors. |
