| Exquisite Silver RINGS BOX Collection of Treasures |
This is an exquisite antique silver box in a unique octagonal shape designed especially to keep rings. The surface is decorated with finely incised 'collection of treasure' design (takarazukushi) and gold inlay highlighting on a matted ground.
The 'collection of treasure' is made up of various traditional objects that came to have auspicious associations over the course of Japanese history. Represented on this box for example is the magic sedge hat, vanishing straw cape, wish-granting mallet, scrolls, treasure balls (hoju), storehouse keys, bottomless pouch/purse and cloves in pairs. Cloves were imported into Japan from around the Heian period and incenses made from their buds were considered as valuable items.
The corners of the box are decorated with attractive thunderbolt design along the body, and elegant purple ribbons adorn the sides. The box's interior is lined with yellow velvet fabric.
There are no prominent flaws on the piece, except that the little knob on the lid seems somehow attached to the lid and does not come down for a full snap as it probably used to in the past. However the lid closes without any problems. There is a very minor uniform loss of gold on the decoration.
The bottom of the box is inscribed 'Mitsukoshi' and 'Pure silver'. Mitsukoshi is a prestigious Japanese department store that was first established as a kimono boutique and became a multiple department store in the early twentieth century. The box was tailored made by the most skilled silver craftsmen of the time, probably for a special customer that Mitsukoshi took the order for.
Thoroughly made of fine silver and filled with charming treasure motifs, this piece is indeed a special box to treasure special rings, and will be a wonderful X'mas gift for your very special one... |
