Kitchen Deities - the island of myths -

This is a round shape wooden sculpture representing the god of wealth, Daikoku. It comes from Shikoku region, a large island in the south of western mainland Japan. Surrounded by the sea and occupied most of its land by steep slopes and mountains, Shikoku has developed its own unique culture and belief.

Perhaps because of that, this Daikoku seems to carry a slightly different ambience from the ones from mainland Japan. The carving lines are relaxed and easy though there are amazing details such as the wrinkles on his forehead, around the mouth, and even under his eyes. This amiable god has a wonderful natural smile.

There is a hollowed part in his right hand where probably a wish-granting mallet was originally placed. The piece has nicely darkened with age and has a nice shine over the surface. It just shows that it had been worshipped and held by many people over generations as a beloved tutelary god. There is a little wear on the back of the sack, but otherwise it is in fine condition.
